What is Most-Recently Used?

When you tap the REDIAL button on your telephone, you are using the most recently used phone number. Modern phones allow you to scroll back through several phone numbers. It is a fast and accurate way of dialing a number.

Many Windows products offer a list of file names at the foot of the application's File menu. The list represents (from the application's point of view), the most recent files used by you in that application.

Example 1: In Microsoft Word you will see documents (*.DOC) and templates (*.DOT) displayed at the foot of the File menu.

Example 2: In Microsoft Excel you will see workbooks (*.XLS) displayed at the foot of the File menu.

Example 3: In Windows MSPaint you will see image files (*.BMP and *.JPG) displayed at the foot of the File menu.

When you take a dinner plate off the stack in the cupboard, you are takig the most recently used dinner plate; typically the plat on the bottom of the stack might not have been used for months!
