What is Most-Recently Used?

The code presented here was developed for Word 2000. It should function perfectly in any later version of Word, and can be adapted easily to other Microsoft office products, for example Excel 2000.

I was dis-satisfied with Microsoft’s approach to the Most-Recently Used file list, at the foot of the File menu, so wrote my own. My experience with that caused to me to examine other aspects of Microsoft’s file-saving, and led me to develop further tools. All those tools and techniques are brought together in a single package, right here, and I am going to lead you through the development of that package in small steps.

Features of the code developed here:

Most-Recently Used

• Customized length of list (not restricted to 9 entries, or 50 entries as in Word 2007)

• Sort in name, path, extent, date last modified, date last used, file length sequences.

• All recently used file types, not just Word documents, are supported; for example, you can now edit that JPG file you saved yesterday, directly from Word; you can leap into a Word perfect document, a Lotus spreadsheet, a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, directly and immediately from my Word MRU list.

• Automatic selection of the text you were editing at the time you closed the document; uses no bookmarks.

• Customized number of stale days, after which entries will be removed from the list (but not deleted from the hard drive!)

• Option to override the stale-days removal and maintain specific files within the list.

• Rapid detection and removal from the list of files which no longer exist.

• Option to inhibit specific extents from accumulation, for example BAK, TMP and so on.

• Option to reset the documents and pictures path to the most recently used document path (as in Tools, Options, File locations)

• Options to absorb Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Other applications MRU list directly from the Registry.

• (Word 2002 and later) option to set most recent folder in the My Places list in the File open/Save dialog boxes.
