I remembered a trip I’d made five years before driving east along these same roads.

I pulled off highway 80 eastbound into a town called Atlantic; I remember there was an “Atlantic” class locomotive parked on the edge of the highway.

Filled up with gas, went inside to pay.

“Where you heading?”

“Home, to Toronto”.

“Where’d you come from?”

“I spent last night in Stirling, Colorado, and had breakfast in Julesburg”.

“Nice little town Julesburg, railway town, isn’t it?”

Yep; about 20 railroad tracks to cross over coming back onto the highway.”

“Where’d you have lunch?”

“I didn’t have lunch. I had breakfast in Julesburg, filled up on the edge of town, and didn’t stop until I got here”.

“So, you drove in one side of Nebraska and out the other, huh?”

And I had.

When I did my sums I found that I’d driven 413 miles on a tank of gas. Since I was driving at a steady 60 miles per hour, that meant I’d driven for seven hours.

Without stopping.
