Trommels
Trommels are mechanical devices used to separate heterogeneous mixtures.
Your hand-held circular garden sieve could be considered a trommel, although the term more often refers to a motor-driven device.
Here’s a little beauty I spotted outside a house on Telegraph Road (Co. Rd 46), east of the intersection with Albra Road, and about half a mail west of the US post office in Pike, New York State.
The electric motor is at the far end, below the frame.
At the same end is the input chute or hopper.
Two concentric sieves are visible.
I assume that the potatoes, vines and soil get tossed in the chute; that the vines are separated from the potatoes, and that the soil drops through.
Here’s a close-up view from the chute-end.
And here is the chute itself.
It’s hard to imagine this serving a farm, but I suppose a laborer’s job would have been to sieve a year’s supply of potatoes in a few hours.
