Last Legs

I just can’t stand WASTE of resources.

Here’s a used kitty-litter box, still lined with it’s plastic bag, holding the results of sieving out my compost bin over a month ago.

There’s good nutrition in that mess, along with the plastic shards, dry bones and other debris that I’m too lazy to sort out from the clumps of castings.

Here’s the box as it stood on the floor. The carton is about fifteen inches on a side, so just over one cubic foot capacity.

It holds 18 KG (about 40 lbs) of dry bentonite clay when new.

Here is the “bin” topped almost to the brim with more sieved scraps.

There’s lots of space in this mess.

Watered down it would only come about half-way up the side of the carton, but right now it’s bone-dry.

Here’s the bin topped up with a 50-50 mixture of castings and peat moss.

And here are some cucurbit seedlings waiting to be transplanted.

I have tipped in a couple of gallons of water and brought the plastic over to retain moisture.

I’ll leave it a week for the moisture to circulate by condensation, then I’ll pop in three seedlings.

I’ll have a transportable bin for zucchini and squash this summer.

And by the end of fall, the soil will have been thoroughly broken up by the roots of the plants, and will yield more processed castings, since those clay-like lumps will be broken down to soil particles.

I bet.
