Can Bacteria and Worms Digest Dairy Products (Cheese)?

This experiment will prove or disprove that cheese can be added to a vermicomposter.

Subsidiary questions are (a) How long does it take a vermicomposter to digest cheddar cheese (b) can worms survive in a vermicomposter containing cheese.

I sliced the 6 faces off a cube of cheese that had turned moldy. The cheese is something like Strong Cheddar; the faces are about 1½” on each side.

I did not weigh the cheese.

I prepared a 7Kg litter pail with damp paper and a margarine tub of soil and castings.

The cheese I placed on the material, with the plastic sheet.

I figured that the sheet would help me identify the original contents at a later date.

I dragged some moist paper mixture on top of the cheese and left the pail for 24 hours.

I added 20 worms to the pail

Then I got tired of counting and just scooped up the separated ball into a margarine tub and weighed it.

Close to 15 grams of worms were added to the pail.
