Coarse sieved material, debris, for a long-term project of breaking it down into castings.

This bin is a kitty-litter carton, about one cubic foot, 18Kg of bentonite clumping clay when new. Probably contains about the same when loaded with moistened coarse material.

A triangular hole is cut in the base of the carton, and a pin-pricked sleeve of plastic liner pokes through, reasons are to be found in Waste Not, Want Not!

A clear plastic bag has been inserted below the opaque cardboard cover. In two days time I will check for condensation.

I explored the upper layers with a rubber-gloved hand.

The “crumbs” are still vaguely damp, but there is no sign of worms or of worm activity.

I added 50 worms from my stock bin, placed a better plastic bag as a cover.

I saw a worm wriggling away from the syrface this morning; first sighting of a worm, but still little evidence of castings.
