Four weeks have passed since delivery, when I scooped 250 g of European Night Crawlers into a pail.

Let’s see how they are getting on ...

I covered the pail with a black plastic garbage bag, tipped the lot over, spread out the sheet and found the top inch or so of material fell out as a circular cake.

Scale: The pail, and hence the cake, is about a foot in diameter.

I suppose that the worms have somehow managed to “bond” the top layer into a cake, although I can’t be sure that it is not a cake of last-minute added material from me.

The worms are easily seen, although none of the big fat juicy ones I saw as I loaded the pail.

Inside the pail is the customary flaky-dry looking material that seems to me like finely shredded paper, brown-stained.

Again, worms are visible; they’ve not had time to retreat from the light source.

I dump a second layer, about an inch thick, on to the sheet and spot some big fat juicy worms.

OK. I’m satisfied that they are surviving, although I did not isolate and weigh them to see if I still had 250g.

After replacing the “cakes”, I added about a measuring-cup of water to moisten it up.

Next week I’ll examine my milk-carton hatchlings nursery.
