Port Perry for the day – Planning

Getting There (and back)

Go Bus to Port Perry

I note that the times in my paper schedule (dated 5 September 2015) look different from the Triplinx times.

Here is a snapshot of the Triplinx.ca Planner screen.

Note the (circled by me) departure time of 7:17 a.m.

And here is a snapshot of my paper schedule from GO Transit.

Note the (circled by me) departure time of 7:28 a.m.

A quick call to the GO Transit help line and I see the error of my ways: I had typed “Toronto” as my starting point for Triplinx, and Triplinx had assumed “Toronto City Hall” which I know well is a 20-minute walk from my residence and hence a 10-minute walk to the GO Station.

Here’s the good part: When I announced my error the lady on the GO Transit help line responded “Oh yes! I’ve made that mistake too”, so I felt not quite so bad, almost a part of the team.

The 7:28 gives me lots of time in Port Perry. Up to twelve hours; or I could do the 9:17 and 16:02 trips and spend as little as six hours in town.

Routes

Port Perry has a bus route that is a Durham Regional Transit route; I had problems working this out for Uxbridge; let’s see if I can work it out for Port Perry.

Exploring

I worked up here twenty years ago, and the business area is quite small, walkable; the waterfront is nice. A friend and I went “ canoeing ” one afternoon.

From memory, the most interesting streets are Queen Street and Water Street.

The GO Bus pulls in at the intersection of Water and Curt Streets (circled)

There may be a slight change of plans.

The weather for next Tuesday looks good – sunny and 15ºC. There is not a lot of main street in Port Perry, nor is there a local bus service.

I may catch the first available GO bus by the 7:28 train from Union Station, Leave Whitby on the 8:29 bus and pass through Port Perry at 9:09 and travel to Beaverton by 10:04.

That bus appears to head back at 10:54 which would give me fifty mintes in Beaverton – enough time for a coffee – and be back in Port Perry by 11:47 – just in time for lunch!

I seem to recall there is not a lot to see in Beaverton, but if Greenbank, Sunderland or Cannington look good (and I doubt that there is much there), I could stay until the next and only bus back which leaves Beaverton at 15:07.

So walk down to the GO York concourse and add $20 to my Presto Card; the balance stands at $43.72.

I realise too that walking to York Concourse (underground) and then to a train platform adds at least five minutes to my morning schedule. Ythis is not “stroll down Bay and leap on a bus idling almost on the street”.

The 07:28 train means I should leave at 6:50. Or at 6:45 if I want to try for a paper at Ryerson Uni on the way down ...
