GO Transit Transit Times

As you stand on the platform waiting for the doors to open, or as you sit in the train waiting for the doors to open, waiting for the doors to close, and waiting for the train to start moving again, you may start to feel that GO Trains spend more time stationary in stations than rolling on the rails.

On Wednesday, July 08, 2015 I made an informal tabulation of times during a trip on the 16:43 Union to Clarkson and on the return trip on what I think was the 20:34.

On the way to Clarkson we spent six and a half minutes with wheels stopped in stations and twenty seven and a half minutes rolling.

Note that “rolling” includes the time spent slowing down on the approach to a station and time speeding up away from the station.

On the way back from Clarkson we spent six and three quarter minutes with wheels stopped in stations and twenty nine minutes rolling.

For these two small samples we see that almost 20% or one-fifth of the trip will be spent sitting staring at a station platform and parking lot.

So if sometimes you think that you’re getting nowhere fast, now you know why!
