Cambridge for the day – Planning

Roughly speaking Cambridge is south of highway 401 while Kitchener/Waterloo lies to the north. The cities share a common system “Grand River Transit”.

The Metrolinx Trip planner suggests taking a #21 GO bus to Milton, then transferring to a #25 Kitchener-Waterloo GO bus that ends up in Cambridge.

I may was well get off in Cambridge and start riding the buses.

A 90-minute transfer system is in place. Thus in theory I can ride for over six hours on four fares.

An ION rapid-transit system of light-rail and bus is planned/being implemented. Routes are identified as iXpress/ION

Tickets are $3 cash or $11.15 (seniors) for a strip of five. A day-pass is $7.50 and can be purchased at the Transit Terminals.

The Ainslie Street (south) is the main Transfer terminal, but the Cambridge Centre (north) serves too. (circled in yellow)

Bus routes are 51-59, 61, 62, 63, 64, 67, 72, 75, 111, 200 and 203. Routes 53, 57, 67 & 72 are peak-hours only.

#200 and #203 seem to be some sort of major service.

Routes 52, 72, 200, 203 connect to Kitchener at Sportsworld.

Getting There

VIA rail Kitchener cost $63.28

There is VIA rail, of course, 10:55 to 12:32 going out and 21:42-23:17 coming back, but for (probably) $80-$100 I’d be better of renting a car from my street and being there in less time and at my own schedule.

The earliest I can get to Orangeville from Union Station is the 6:50-8:40 trip; 8:40 is not a bad time to arrive, and 6:50 is, compared to some trips I have made, a late start.

If I am prepared to be back at Union as late as ten o’clock, leaving on the eight o’clock bus, I can have over nine hours in Cambridge and/or Kitchener-Waterloo.

Which brings us to The Law of Diminishing Return Trips: The further away from Toronto I travel, the more time (and money) it will take to get there and the less time I will have in my destination.

Cambridge and/or Kitchener-Waterloo is relatively far and relatively big, so a short day in town “hurts” more than it would if it were, say, the size of Bradford.

Of course, an overnight stay in a cheap but clean and simple motel solves the problem of size, but then it is not a out-of-town-for-the-day trip, is it?

A general rule suggests itself: If I can get there from Toronto by VIA rail, it is probably not a suitable destination for a day-trip.
