The plan is to take a first tentative step by traveling by GO bus to Barrie, wander around the downtown core, and come back the same day.

It is bus all the way; trains run commuters in to Toronto in the morning and out to Barrie in the afternoon.

A suitable schedule for me looks like this:

Leave Union at 6:40; transfer at Newmarket at 7:40; arrive in Barrie at 9:35. That is, a 3 hour trip.

To minimize the time spent sitting in a bus, leave Union at 7:10 and leave Barrie on the 20:55. That would give me nearly twelve hours to “do” Barrie.

Get the 7:10 to Barrie; take a lunch; buy a breakfast in Barrie, walk the streets. Take a bag and lunch etc or else for this first trip just a camera and cash?

This will be my first “Tourist-of-Toronto” trip and I want it to go well. For that reason I’ll leave early, 7:10 am for the 8:10 am bus; it is a 30-minute walk from home to the bus station, and so that allows me 30 minutes to work out where and how to buy a ticket and, possibly, to get a good seat on the bus.

I will travel light; while I might take a tortilla and a hard-boiled egg for a snack on the way up, I’ll not take my shoulder bag. I’ll take a cell phone (for podcasts and radio entertainment) and my little camera to record the trip.

I’ll take a credit card just-in-case but I ought not to need to use it.

And to help make the trip a success, I’ll come home as soon as I feel I’ve had enough fun for the day.
