System Tasks
Here are a few basic procedures you'll want to know to keep your Ubuntu system in trim and proper shape:
Installing Updates to the Ubuntu System
Ubuntu, like Windows, will provide and install updates to the system. My preference is to install all current updates immediately after installation (They know better than me), but then to turn OFF automatic updates while I learn the system. I like to know that the system I am exploring is unchanged from day to day during the first week or so.
Procedure
- Choose the System settings application, and within that choose Software Sources and click on the Updates.
- Check ON "Important security updates"
- Check ON "Recommended updates"
- Check OFF "Prerelease"
- Check OFF "Unsupported"
- Choose the Update Manager icon from the sidebar (mine shows 282 updates outstanding!) then choose "Install updates" and go to supper.
This may take 30 minutes or more; when complete it will ask for "Restart Now".
- Back in System Settings; Software Sources, "Updates" tab, check OFF automatic updates.
And we are done.
A week from now you may be inclined to turn automatic updates ON, or you may prefer to continue to install manually at quiet times in your operations schedule.
