Get the Basic Kit

I searched the web for Ubuntu and ended up at http://www.ubuntu.com/

I chose the command "Get Ubuntu now".

I chose to download the kit.

And I went with the default, which at this time was Ubuntu 11.10, 32-bit, but by the time you read this, a later version will probably be available.

I start the download:

The file is about 600 MB, so on a typical "high-speed" 3 Mbs line it will take about a half an hour to download.

Here it is safely stored as "ubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso" on my Windows 7 Home Premium Notebook computer.

Now I need to decide what medium to use as the installation tool.

We have a choice - a USB memory stick or a CD.

I started with a USB memory stick, then found that I needed a CD for a an old system that wouldn't boot from USB, so I did both!
