Example only.

I have two ComStar 300GB drives I bought about 18 months ago.

300GB is more than enough for my needs, and I have vast collections of client data - huge databases of documents etc - stored on them.

Some computer chain stores may have some 300GB still hanging around at about $80.

If you live out of town you *might* save $ by buying one in Toronto.

Two more observations:

Observation 1: Nowadays external drives can be powered via the USB cable, and therefore do not need a power-block. If I were buying today, I’d avoid drives that need that power-block – it is one more cable to plug in, to plug out, to break.

Observation 2: Some drives have a convex-curved edge and arrive with a little plastic stand to hold them upright. This is not only downright dopey, but it is dangerous too. If I were buying today I’d avid these drives and get ones with pure, rectangular bodies that can stand by themselves without needing extra brackets.
