Regulated Drink Bowl

Sunday, June 07, 2009

And it's Ho! Let’s make a Regulated Drink Bowl

It’s so easy.

You will need two plastic bottles of different sizes. I have a green 2-litre bottle void of rubbish, and a 1-litre bottle that used to hold that excellent aromatic drink Brio .

Slice the base off the larger bottle. Mine had a handy guideline along which I could cut using my sharp knife.

DON’T toss the base in the garbage!

Place the inverted smaller bottle inside the larger bottle. You can see that a portion of the base of the interior bottle extends so that I can grip it to withdraw it.

And yes, I’m doing all this while making fish cakes.

Test your disgorger by filling the smaller bottle with water, and placing the assembly in a large basin.

Raise the neck from the basin by about a quarter of an inch, and water should flow out to make a drinking level of about two inches.

You can see the water level in the foreground, the near edge of my mixing bowl.

Locate the spot where your fountain will be. I decided to put it in the eating/drinking place.

I have mounted the bottle assembly in the cats drinking bowl. An old copy of Michener’s “Tales of The South Pacific” raises the base of the bowl by the amount I want clear at the neck of the bottle.

The neck of the bottle is standing dry on the base of the bowl.

Two small wood-screws will hold the assembly in place.

I remove the paperback book, charge the smaller bottle with water and Voila! As a French cat would say.

Oh yes. The base.

Makes an excellent saucer for a house plant.
