Christopher Greaves Experiments_HPIM4300.JPG

Coarse sieved material, debris, for a long-term project of breaking it down into castings.

This bin is a kitty-litter carton, about one cubic foot, 18Kg of bentonite clumping clay when new. Probably contains about the same when loaded with moistened coarse material.

The tub when partially filled directly from my sieving weighs only 5 pounds, but this is unfilled, not compacted, and not moistened.

The carton is lined with an impermeable plastic liner – from the original clay – and the top is covered loosely with a clear plastic bag.

The clear plastic bag should show me over the next few days whether the bin is moist enough.

My theory is that a suitably-moist bin displays a small amount of condensation on the underside of a loose plastic cover.

Dry on top.

Worms were evident near the top, but no castings.

I added 1 cup water.
