So I bottled some beetroot and two jars didn’t seal and I didn’t notice for a couple of days, so they are composter-bound.

I just tipped the two jars on top of the heap.

There is no vinegar; these ½ inch cubes are bottled in water only. You can see the darker chunks are those that have begun to decompose or are infected with bacteria.

Here is a close-up of the same stuff, just for the record.

I replaced the black plastic bag sheets and closed the lid. In a week I’ll see how they are getting on.

Six days later all traces of the cubed beets are gone.

My theory is that the bacteria get stuck straight into them, plenty of air here, and the worms pig out.

Six days and all traces are gone.

Thus emboldened I have tipped the peelings of another batch of boiled beets onto the bin.

Yes, there’s a crumpled scrap of paper in there too.
