Seeds

I harvest seeds and maintain a catalogue, especially seeds harvested from plant life in and around Bonavista. I reason that if a pumpkin seed planted in Bonavista produces a plant that fruits with pumpkins, then that species or line is adapted to Bonavista's weather, and has a good chance of success next year. By similar reasoning I tend not to buy seeds from Florida or South Carolina.

If you would like to experiment by planting a particular variety, drop by and pick up an envelope of seeds.

Harvested a extra envelope of maple seeds.

Friday, September 15, 2023

Still needs work. An Example: 09 says “Yellow Weed”, and is probably something I harvested from the side of the highway. Pineapple weed? St John’s Wort? Matt would know. Or I could plant a small plot next year to see what comes up.

As I work through the collection I find many commercial packets of seeds unopened! But now I have 1,000 planting sticks. Next year I can label plant sticks with my seed catalogue number and keep better track of what works here and what does not.

Thursday, May 16, 2024

I now have 84 different types of seeds available. Some of the series (66-77) you can obtain directly through https://pfseeds.ca/ , but the rest you can pick up when you stop in to The Landfall Garden House .

White Spruce seeds: See today’s entry in Diary

Wednesday, October 25, 2023

Plum tree seeds.

I buy plums and boil the flesh for jam. I retain the seeds/nuts/pits and extract the seed kernels by careful compression in a set of adjustable pliers. This process delivers a handful of nut shards and a small collection of kernels.

Christopher Greaves index_20231025_095923.jpg

In the photo above you can see thirteen kernels. The seven kernels at the bottom of the photo are regular size, shape, and mass.

The three kernels circled are to my mind probably not going to germinate. Two of the three kernels are paper-thin, and the third is shriveled.

I have paired each of these three kernels with a normal kernel.

My expectation is that if I plant these three pairs in three separate containers filled with soil from a single source, that the three normal kernels might germinate, but that the three shriveled seeds probably won’t germinate.

(Wednesday, November 15, 2023) I place a marker stick with “Plum” written on it, and plant the two seeds on opposite sides of each tin, with the marker placed alongside the regular kernel, and the shriveled kernel diametrically opposite the regular kernel.
