The handle on the coffee jug cracked, and I wasn’t prepared to risk a pint of hot coffee over my desk, so I collected a DeLonghi for only $4 at the Markland Wood Annual Garage Sale .

Into the old jug go a few handfuls of pebbles, some water, and a batch of oat grass seed.

Let’s see how they get on.

Well, too much water, so I drained some out.

My theory is that I’ll be able to add a half-dozen oat seeds each day and have a perpetual crop of oat grass for Jupiter and Bumpous.

If the oat roots go deep enough I’ll be able to put the jar down for them to feed from for a couple of minutes each day.

Here Jupiter demonstrates how to nibble the tops off the oat grass.

I have too much gravel/pebbles.

Sprinkling oat seed atop the pebbles means the jar has to be ½ full of water for the seeds to germinate.

That much water attracts fungus gnats.

I have therefore removed all but about a one-inch layer of wet gravel.

A dozen or so seeds are sprinkled on the top. Most fall down into a damp crevice.
