Put a sock ON it, not in it!

Cut the foot-part off the old sock when the ankle rim is tattered.

Make a narrow slit the length of a mug-handle, leaving a half-inch or so of material at the top rim.

Slide the sock leg-part over your mug of hot beverage.

Trim the length carefully; here you see that I have allowed an extra half-inch of sock to curl under the mug, providing an insulated base better to keep my mug warm.
