At 1630 Bernard brings over a bike which, he claims, has a broken gear lever ("shifter"). Nothing else wrong with it. He says.

I shall count the teeth, determine the gear ratios, and either replace the lever or fix the gear to the low ratio (for that wheel) and use the other gear lever.
