Apple Tree
A good friend gave me two Matsu apples.
I chopped one into small cubes, boiled them with a spoon of sugar, and had a fruity snack.
The uncooked core will, I hope, produce an apple tree.
I get a regular three-inch tub, salvaged from the dumpster, load it with sieved vermicomposter soil, and press the cube-core into the surface so that the top of the cube is flush with the soil.
I top the pot with more soil, covering the core cube.
Then it is onto a tray inside a shirt bag to provide a leak-proof micro-climate.
Add water, let it soak, and observe.
I have had success with citrus trees in this way – planting the seeds still within, or closely surrounded by, some of the fruit. Perhaps some organic signal tells the seeds to sprout. I have more success this way than by separating the seeds and planting them in isolation.
