Direct-Drive Trommel

The direct-drive trommel is driven by a motor wheel or gear in direct contact with the cylinder. I have seen models operating with a solid rubber wheel on the spindle of the motor and the rubber wheel in contact with a rim of the mesh cylinder.

Like the belt-driven trommel, if we drive a rim at the end of the cylinder, a turning force will be applied and the cylinder might quickly crumple into a spiral

This video shows a mains powered-drill driving a small wheel on some sort of shaft. It is not clear to me whether the entire shaft turns (and hence carries energy to the second bicycle rim), or wther the rims move freely on the shaft as an axle.

This video at the 3m03s mark shows a multi-stage trommel. In my terms I would use the full eight feet of construction mesh (96 inches) and have a sleev made from three different grdes of mesh.

In the image above the furthest screen is fine, then comes medium and then coarse. A fourth grade – gross-coarse off course shoots out of the nearest end of the trommel.

When funnels/chutes are used under ythe drum, we need extra height to fit the wheelbarrows.

I have documented a design for a suspended trommel. A powered shaft has three sprockets whicxh drive by bicycle chain the three 26” rims of bicycle wheels.

Reg Fl;eming stripped down a sprocket forme:-

Reg removed this cassette from an old rear wheel, took it apart, cleaned each component, and re-assembled it while I watched.

Six gear plates are used, with five spacer bands in between. The central hub and bearing is about 1.5” diameter with room for a ¾” shaft.

A collar from a 3” length of galvanized pipe could be used to adapt to a narrower shaft.

Three such cassettes could be welded to the drive shat. The catch is that on each of the three cassettes, the teeth numbers must match.

Three single gear plates with 15, 17 and 19 teeth each would not suit.

Either we must cannibalize three cassettes whicg contain matching teeth or I must buy three matching cassettes.\The shat is driven by a motor, and here I fancy having
