Clear Thinking

A common phrase in the Political Ovals (an oval is a circle that has been warped out of shape) is “Mandate”. The general meaning is taken as “We have a right to force this issue because People Voted us in to do just this”.

In this reported issue the Liberal party wants to push Legislation through to change the way parliament operates.

“We made clear Commitments in the [Election] Campaign ...” runs the argument.

This argument does not hold water.

The liberals made many clear commitments in the election campaign, amongst them Electoral Reform.

I would argue that the election victory could be as easily assigned to the promise of electoral reform, and that if you Renege on any one Promise, you lose the right to operate a “mandate” on any other promise.

You can’t have it both ways.
