Clear Thinking

You can’t have it both ways. Well, all three ways, actually.

Pride is:-

(1) A Protest

(2) A Celebration

(3) A Protest AND a Celebration

If the Gay Pride Parade is just a protest, then it doesn’t warrant city funding.

If however the Gay Pride Parade passes itself off as a celebration, then it doesn’t warrant city funding, especially if the funding (for street management) is then used to stage a protest.

Plainly: If it is a city-sponsored celebration, then don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

Observations

On weekends the papers – The Globe And Mail and The National especially – run Financial Profiles of people looking to retire and/or get out of debt. A financial expert is hauled in to offer suggestions.

I have decided to track a few month’s figures , because especially in the realms of food I am a astonished at the amount of money people spend on food.

Now. No two families are identical, but as a rough guide I figure that food is eaten at home and outside the home (“dining out”), and that the cost of food for a child is equal to the cost for an adult. Either the teenager eats like a horse (is served bigger portions) or sulkily refuses to eat broccoli (gets thrown away).

So I shall track:

(1) The number of members of the family

(2) The dollar amount spent on groceries

(3) The dollar amount spent on dining out

A great deal would depend on how a particular family classifies the cost of popcorn at the cinema, hot dogs at the ball game, or ice-creams when strolling along the beach.

I do not include pets in the family size, although pet food can be a significant cost.

I do not include “entertainment”, “travel” and similar items that may have a food component.

Here is the data for the example shown above:-
