Observations

Toronto is such a weird city.

Like most cities it has a downtown core, and streets cross this way and that.

Here I am (I think) at the intersection of Richmond and Simcoe Streets, looking north towards Queen Street, and there are no street signs to tell me whether or not I have yet reached Duncan Street.

Same intersection (of Richmond and Simcoe Streets), looking east towards Yonge Street, and there are no street signs to tell me whether or not I have yet reached Duncan Street.

I stood on the opposite corner for a while looking, then crossed to this corner. Couldn’t see a sign of a sign.

Know what else is weird about Toronto Street signs? Some of them bear the street number, so that you can see that you are on Bay Street, and the adjacent building is 465 Bay Street (so you need to walk a little further).

But some of the street signs don’t bear the street number, so that you have no idea whether you need to walk a little further).

When I’m helping out someone who is lost, I point to the street sign and say “Look! You are at 465 Bay Street right now”, but I can only say that about half the time.

Why not put street numbers on all the signs? Obviously We Have the Technology.

I am not split on this issue. I think that tolls on major highways might be a good idea. But in particular I don’t see a conflict with my arguments for Fully Funded Public Transit .

In particular I wonder whether we might be better served by restricting exit points on the Don Valley Parkway/Gardiner Highways. Suppose you could access the highways only at (1) Steeles Avenue (2) Highway 401 (3) Downtown and (4) Highway 427. Then the highways would truly be a fast way to cut into or across town.

Edward Keenan rightly suggests that its best if there is an alternative toll-free route alongside a tolled route. We have Highway 7 alongside Highway 407. Buffalo has parkways that run parallel to the I-190, and if you don’t want to pay a toll to cross the two bridges, you can just skirt the island altogether.
