Ben Spur on Monday reported on Brad Ross saying that the fare kiosks in subway stations will soon be going.

Not soon enough.

We should get rid of pay-per-use – also known as “fares” – and save a bundle on city public transit costs (for the city) by making Public Transit Fully-Funded.

I noted in my essay:-

Those men and women who freeze in the subway kiosks in wintertime, dreaming of summer, and who sweat out the summer dreaming of winter could be removed from the kiosks and become much more productive as Information Officers or Mobility Assistants in each subway station.

Saving $5,000,000 per years has to be trivial compared to the cost of supporting and running the set of fare sub-systems.
