I think of this as typical new-Year fodder. It is not stated as a New year’s resolution, but it has all the feel-good about Making A Fresh Start.

But look closely: the city’s General Manager of Transportation – Stephen Buckley – is reported to have said “Toronto’s streets are still safe”.

Still? Compared to when?

And to give the sidebar credit it does he word “Comparison”, but I suspect Stephen Buckley should have said “Toronto’s streets are still RELATIVELY safe” and included some comparisons.

If you have ever died as a result of being struck by a car while crossing the street, you’ll have that feeling that the streets in Toronto are not safe; not “not necessarily safe”, but “Not Safe”.

If you have ever been injured in any way as a result of being struck by a car while crossing the street, you’ll have that feeling that the streets in Toronto are not safe; not “not necessarily safe”, but “Not Safe”.

If you have ever been threatened with injury by a car that is blocking the sidewalk, and suddenly decides to reverse back into the driveway while you are walking behind it to get on your way, you’ll have that feeling that the streets in Toronto are not safe; not “not necessarily safe”, but “Not Safe”.

As long as pedestrians lose out in any contest with a wheeled vehicle, Toronto’s streets are Not Safe.

Toronto’s Transit System, and by extension the transit system for the Greater Toronto Area/Region whatever, is in disarray because the Toronto City Council get to make decisions, and Toronto City Councilors can be seen to have both eyes focused firmly on the next election.

Planning for transit lies so far beyond a four-year term that it is laughable; that’s why Toronto’s (lack of) progress) is laughable.

I feel it in my bones that any City Councilor who switched to a thirty-year view of transit for the GTA would probably still be Premier of the Province of Ontario Thirty years from now.

It’s not about money; the money is there or will be found. It’s about getting people who can take a long-term view.
