Write to Your Member of Parliament
I hold this truth to be self-evident: Your national representative (member of parliament) is rewarded for their work.
Sometimes the reward is monetary; sometimes the reward is satisfaction for a life well-lived. Sometimes the reward is both these, and then perhaps some more.
But there is a reward, of that I am sure.
Think about it.
The reward arrives while the representative is elected, and the reward disappears when the representative is not elected (loses their seat).
It must follow that representatives who feel that the reward outweighs the cost will want to be re-elected.
So if a representative feels that re-election might not be possible, they will work to improve their chances.
How might that work for us?
Take a current example: The wailing and gnashing of teeth that is going on in the USA right now. The current president won 49.8% to 48.3% . That’s close to a 50-50 split. The popular votes is reported as 77,302,580 to 75,017,613 which I see as 51% to 49%.
Those figures tell us that 152 million votes were cast, about 44% of the population of the USA.
Let us suppose that all of one side detest the way the country is being run after 100 days in power, and that a chunk – perhaps 20% - of the other side detest the way the country is being run after 100 days in power. Plug your own figures in there.
Suppose too that every one of those 106,000,000 voters wrote to their representative exclaiming their dissatisfaction.
(1) That would boost the short-term finances of the Post Office system
(2) It would tell the representative that unless things change in the NEXT 100 days, then the representative will be out of a job. The rewards will be turned off.
Of course some representatives are ready to quit anyway – time to turn attention to the family, the business, reading books, writing memoirs, fishing, and so on.
But a significant proportion of The representatives will get the message that their primary task is to remedy the situation, and that they have just 100 days to demonstrate, publicly, that they were responsible in part of that change.
What of it?
