Utah Students Hide Guns

Wednesday February 20, 2008

More bad logic, quoted as news.

Utah State Representative Curtis: "When you see someone with a gun, you are looking at some of the most law-abiding people in the state," he said.

Not true. As many have learned, when they see someone with a gun, it is the last thing they see in their short lives. And that person carrying a gun is not one of the most law-abiding people in the state.

Indeed, the next paragraph in the article reads “The issue goes beyond campus. Last year, a few miles from the University of Utah, a man walked into Trolley Square, a Salt Lake City shopping mall, and opened fire. Police were there in only three minutes, but the shooter had already killed five people and wounded four others.”

Student Kevin Rechtenbach of the University of Utah said: "If acts of terrorism continue on campus, then I will have no choice but to carry a concealed weapon," he said.

Nonsense. Or if you prefer, non-sense. Or insane. Irrational, at any rate.

We always have a choice, to carry a weapon or not. “ … then I will have no choice …” are the words of someone who has viewed the choices and prematurely made up their mind to ignore all but one choice.

"I own some guns, and I wish I was allowed to have them at school," said Collin Barker, a BYU student. "I would just keep [them] in my car for target shooting."

Colin may or may not be aware that some of the choicest targets are at school, as many educators across the U.S.A. might be quick to point out. And the local police will probably be happy to re-assure him that no, cars never get stolen around campus. Never.
