They

I promise you this: the next time you hear the word “They”, capitalized, and followed by “should do something” (then “about it”), you can safely tune out and dream of the coming summer.

“They” do not exist. “They” do not exist at all. “They” is a term used to mean “Not me”.

“They” should do something about climate change means “As long as I don’t have to get rid of my second car” or “Providing that I can keep my thermostat at 22ºc and not have to wear a sweater or pullover when I am at home”.

“They” means that I can continue to drive through the no-touch car-wash facility instead of getting out the garden hose on a sunny day.

“They” means that I do not need to build a small compost bin but can instead continue to put out kitchen scraps for a smelly old garbage truck and run to the mall in my SUV and collect plastic bags of top-soil trucked in from five hundred miles away.

“They” is an admission that I am incapable of looking after my local environment; “They” is an admission that I am incapable of THINKING about of looking after my local environment”.

And an admission that I am incapable of thinking means that I really do not deserve to belong to the sentient human species.

I think that they should do something about that!
