Half a million spread in a linear fashion over seventeen years is about thirty thousand each year. Not a lot in the population of The United Kingdom.

What is/was the population of the UK in that period?

Which to me looks like an average increase in population of 490,000 per year.

Assuming equal distribution of the sexes, say 245,000 new women every year.

Of those 245,000 women, how many are “under 70 not living in a couple and who have never married,”? I don’t know, but 30,000 or about one in eight women is the ratio.
