It is Called an “Amendment”, Why not change it?

Another day

Another gun battles in the USA.

Another news report.

Another interview with the-man-on-the-street.

Another vapid explanation that, you see, “ The Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution protects the right to keep and bear arms. It was ratified on December 15, 1791”

Ho hum.

These citizens are not well-educated; they are not a THINKING species and their membership in Homo sapiens might well be revoked without anguish.

Note that the second amendment was ratified (confirmed) in 1791, two hundred and thirty three years ago.

Times have changed in those two hundred and thirty three years.

Note that the constitution's fifth article provides for changes to the constitution; these changes are called Amendments, of which the gun-bearing nation bases its life and death.

Thirty-three amendments to the Constitution of the United States have been proposed by the United States Congress and sent to the states for ratification since the Constitution was put into operation on March 4, 1789. Twenty-seven of those, having been ratified by the requisite number of states, are part of the Constitution.

So let’s see:-

(1) The constitution can be amended.

(2) Thirty-three amendments have been proposed at the time of writing (Wednesday, July 24, 2024)

(3) Of these twenty seven have been ratified/approved/passed.

(4) To the best of my knowledge, no one has yet proposed an amendment to the death rate in the USA.

(5) And while every man and his dog spout off about the irrevocability of the second amendment before taking another swig from the bottle, they all conveniently overlook the fact that the 18th amendment prohibited alcohol and the twenty-first allowed it, not one of them has twigged to the idea that an amendment means a change.

Oh! We can’t change that, you see, it is an amendment.

(later) Joe Biden is proposing an amendment to the constitution ; that it has got this far suggest to me that amendments to the consitution are still possible in the USA.
